The life of Muslims in the United States of America has changed a lot since the heartbreaking terrorist attack on September 11, 2001. The main character named Rizwan Khan suffers from an incurable disease, Asperger's syndrome. He is a Muslim by faith, but he spent his entire childhood and adolescence in India, and then decided to move to his brother in San Francisco to start a new life.

Despite his diagnosis, he manages to get acquainted with a charming Mandira, whom he falls in love with, and then marries. She had a son, whom the main character adopts and loves as his own offspring. But their happiness does not last long, after the terrorist attack, the life of Muslims changes a lot, they begin to humiliate and try to insult as much as possible. The stepson at school became the object of cruel bullying, which led to his death.
