The million-strong army of King Xerxes began the invasion of Greece. The Spartan king Leonid and his people meet a delegation demanding "land and water", i.e. complete submission to the Persian king Xerxes. In response, the Spartans throw the inhabitants into the well. Despite predictions of defeat by the priests bribed by the Persians, Leonid leads a Spartan detachment and continues his campaign, blocking the path of the Persians at the Fiery Gate in the Thermopylae Valley.
There Leonid refuses the help of local residents — the hunchbacked Epialt, the son of a runaway Spartan who can only take care of the wounded, the enraged Epialt takes away his father's weapons.
