The American Mary B. Cuddy is considered by others to be an independent and strong person. A woman farmer is able to take care of herself and her loved ones. One day, she agrees to transport three insane women to a special clinic. The main character has to make a difficult journey from Nebraska to Iowa. Indians and numerous bandits often attack poorly armed travelers, hoping to profit from valuable things and money.

On the road, Merry rescues a half-dead man who was left to die with a noose around his neck in the middle of a lifeless desert.
